| 2007-04-10: 7th Annual Stowe Weekend of Hope |
Stowe, Vermont - The seventh annual Stowe Weekend of Hope, which will be held in Stowe, Vermont May 4-6, 2007 has become one of the most inspiring and educational events for cancer survivors in the country today. Presented by Stowe Area Association, Vermont Cancer Center and Copley Health Systems, hundreds of cancer patients and their families join to celebrate life and to learn more about coping with this pervasive disease.
"Since its inception, the Stowe Weekend of Hope has offered thousands of people information and inspiration," said Valerie Rochon, Executive Director of the Stowe Area Association. "This event brings together renowned cancer experts with survivors from all over the U.S. and Canada, offering the opportunity for life-altering networking. In addition, the peace and serenity of Stowe’s natural landscape creates a rejuvenating experience."
Marcelle Leahy, wife of U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont will be guest speaker at the Opening Ceremony on Friday, May 4. Mrs. Leahy is a melanoma survivor, and since being treated she has spoken publicly about her experiences with the hope of educating others regarding the success of treatment for early detection of skin cancer. Governor James Douglas will also offer the official welcome and present the Proclamation declaring May 4-6 as the Stowe Weekend of Hope. The event is unique because, unlike most national events, which focus on only one form of cancer, the Stowe Weekend of Hope is for people with all forms of cancer. In 2006, the event brought over 1000 participants representing 27 different types of cancer together from 26 states and 3 Canadian provinces.
Cancer survivors and their families are lodged in hundreds of hotel rooms donated by Stowe lodging owners. While there is currently a wait-list for these complimentary rooms, discounted rooms are also available, starting at $48 per night.
Amtrak generously donates a car for the "Train of Hope," departing from Washington, D.C. and stopping in fifteen cities, including Philadelphia and New York, offering cancer survivors without means of getting to Stowe transportation. (Train is currently full)
the free workshops and seminars include updates from field experts, information on new treatments, support, nutrition, clinical trials, prevention, care giving and much more. The keynote speaker will be Christine Clifford Beckwith, survivor, humorist, and creator of the world’s leading source of gifts and inspiration for people dealing with cancer, The Cancer Club.
In addition to the diverse educational offerings, the weekend will provide many inspirational, healing and social events. On Saturday evening, the Stowe Community Church will host an ecumenical candlelight ceremony, and closing ceremonies at the Trapp Family Lodge will feature the dedication of the Flags of Hope and Healing created by attendees throughout the weekend. Writing, yoga, art therapy, and nature walks explore the restorative and therapeutic benefits of these activities. Themed dinners with physician specialists encourage networking with others coping with the same type of cancer on Friday evening.
